About grab bars

Landlords & Property Managers

Turnovers, punch lists, and repairs across your units, with notes and photos on every job so you know what was done.

For property managers
How does it work?

Call, look, fix.

No call center, no crew you have never met. You talk to the person who does the work, from the first phone call to the last sweep of the floor.

Call or send a request

Tell me what is going on. Most jobs get scheduled from that first conversation.

I look

Detailed pictures are often enough. If not, I come take a look. Either way, I tell you what it will take before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

The work gets done

Done right, cleaned up, and written up so you know exactly what was fixed and where things stand.

Need a grab bar?

Grab bars installed
safe and secure.
Life on your own terms.

A grab bar is only as good as its mounting. I locate and mount directly into the studs, or use Moen Home Care SecureMount anchors, or add solid blocking if need be. I set the bars at the height that fits the person using them, and test them before I leave.

  • For aging in place, coming home after surgery, or peace of mind for a loved one
  • Showers, tubs, toilets, and other bathroom locations, plus hallways, entries, and stairs
  • Handrails, lever door handles, and other small changes that make a home easier to live in

What about electrical and plumbing?

Let's work out the right approach.

Oregon licenses electrical and plumbing work separately from general contracting. If your project includes that work, call me and we'll sort it out together.

Safety

The whole point is to stop the fall before it happens. That's easier, and kinder, than healing from one.

Stability

Placed where the hand actually reaches: stepping into the shower, standing up from the toilet, lowering into the tub.

Peace of Mind

For you, or for the parent you check on. One less thing to worry about every morning and night.

Why does it matter?

Most bathroom injuries are falls.

Falls are the leading cause of injury, and of injury deaths, for people 65 and older, and the numbers are climbing. About eight in ten bathroom injuries are falls. The older we get, the more of those happen getting on and off the toilet or in and out of the tub.

The bathroom is a hard floor, wet surfaces, and nothing to hold onto but a towel bar. A towel bar is not a grab bar. It's screwed into drywall with hardware meant to hold a towel.

Who are grab bars for?

Everyone who uses a bathroom.

Grab bars are like handrails on stairs. Nobody needs them until they do, and by then it's late to be shopping. The people who call me are usually:

  • Looking after a parent or spouse who's started bracing against the wall
  • Home from a surgery, or getting ready for one
  • Fine, and planning to stay in their own home for a long time
  • Landlords with older tenants or a turnover coming up

Nobody has to be old, or unsteady, to want one. I've caught myself on a towel bar too.

Where do they go?

Four places, and I can help you find the best placement for your needs.

  1. Inside the shower: a horizontal bar on the side or back wall, for standing and for a shower seat.
  2. At the shower or tub entry: a vertical or angled bar for the step over the threshold. This is where most people fall.
  3. Beside the toilet: a horizontal bar on the side wall, long enough to help sitting down and standing up.
  4. Along the tub: a bar at or just above the rim for lowering in and getting out.

There's a standard starting height, the same one public bathrooms are built to, and where occupational therapists start too. Then I adjust for the person: their height, which hand is stronger, whether they sit to shower. A bar placed for a 6-foot man doesn't help a 5-foot-2 woman.

What makes it hold?

What's behind the wall.

A grab bar is only as good as what it's screwed into. That's the whole trade.

  • Stud or no stud. The bar goes where the person needs it, not where the framing happens to be. When there's a stud behind that spot, I screw into it. When there isn't, I use the Moen SecureMount anchor, the industry standard for grab bars where a stud can't be used. It spreads the load behind the drywall and is rated for the job.
  • The right hole in the right wall. Tile, drywall, and plaster each need their own bit and a careful hand.
  • Rated hardware. The standard is a bar that holds 250 pounds of pull. That's what I install to.
  • Tested before I leave. I pull on every bar. Hard.
What does certified mean?

GBIAA Certified Grab Bar Installer.

The Grab Bar Installers Association of America is the national certification for this work. Certified installers are trained and tested on wall assessment, anchoring, placement, and documentation, and agree to a code of practice. The standards for the bars themselves, how much they hold and where they go, have been around for decades. What didn't exist was any way to check the person installing them. GBIAA is the first certification built for that, and I hold it.

How does it work?

Call, look, install.

Call

Tell me who the bar is for and where the trouble is. Five minutes on the phone usually tells me most of what I need.

Look

I come out, look at the walls, and watch how the person moves in the space. That's where the placement comes from, not a chart.

Install

Bars in, tested, wiped down, mess gone. Your invoice shows what went in and where.

Most single-bathroom jobs are done in one visit.

What about my rental?

Landlords and property managers, too.

Grab bars are one of the cheapest things you can do for an older tenant, and one of the easiest requests to say yes to. I work with property managers on tenant requests, turnovers, and getting a unit ready for an aging renter. Same bars, same anchoring, invoiced to the account.

Will Medicare pay?

Usually not. Here's who does.

  • Original Medicare treats grab bars as a home modification, not medical equipment, and doesn't cover them.
  • Some Medicare Advantage plans include a home safety or over-the-counter allowance that covers bars and installation. Call the number on the card and ask.
  • Veterans: the VA's HISA grant pays for bathroom safety changes for eligible vets. Ask at the VA.

Whatever the route, I give you an itemized invoice that shows what was installed and where, which is what these programs ask for.

Questions property managers ask

Straight answers.

Can you work with my tenants directly?

Yes. Send me the work order and the tenant's contact information, and I'll set a time with them.

What do I get when the job is done?

Notes and photos of the work, plus an invoice you can forward to the owner.

Do I need to be there?

No. If there's a lockbox or a key to pick up, tell me how you handle access, and I'll follow your process.

How fast can you get there?

It depends on the week. I'll tell you honestly when I can get there, and then I'll be there when I said I would.

Are you licensed and insured?

Licensed, Bonded & Insured, Oregon CCB #261760. When we first meet, I bring an introduction folder for your files, including a signed W-9.

Let's talk about your units.

Who is mr O?

The story, in my own words.

I'm Jonny, owner of mr O's Handyman Service, based in Summerville and serving Union County.

I learned this trade the long way. For twenty years I lived in a building built in 1828 in New Orleans, right in the heart of the French Quarter. I kept it up — rebuilding rotted window and door sills, tracking down and repairing Formosan termite damage, restoring windows and doors, stopping water intrusion, skim coating lath and plaster, repointing brick walls and patching stucco three floors up on a stepladder. It was a labor of love, and I learned an enormous amount.

Then, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, I came back from evacuation with a dump truck and Bobcat. I worked my dump truck and Bobcat service for five years after the storm, in that long line of dump trucks, working the recovery. Most of my working life before that was spent in service jobs, where showing up on time and being straight with people is the whole job.
